Elastohydrodynamic Traction Fluid
The Orbital Mechanical Adjustable Speed Drive transmits power from one rolling element to another through an extremely thin film of an elastohydrodynamic lubricant (“EHL”). EHLs have the unique property that under normal pressures they behave as a lubricant, but when compressed between two metallic rolling bodies they become glassy solids that provide traction between the rolling elements. This interaction results in superior torque transfer through the transmission compared to results achieved using conventional transmission fluids. An added benefit of using EHLs is less wear and tear on the mechanical components of the assembly, which prolongs the life of the transmission. Although it is beneficial to run the Orbital Mechanical Adjustable Speed Drive with an EHL for the maximum torque and power transfer, it is not required in all applications.
